One ride so far and it was NOT a dry one. Pictures don’t do justice to the full coverage of dirt. It was everywhere. But that’s what it’s for! I bought it at 3:00 pm and had to wait until 9:00 to put pedals to it and within 5 minutes I was totally impressed with the traction going up a steep, wet, muddy river bed.

Turns out riding fast down a wet, muddy river will give both you and your bike a good coating. Yes, I hosed it down, wiped it down, and oiled appropriately after.

I can’t wait to get on it again, it’s lurking in my office just taunting me; I’m hoping to get out at lunch on some trails I can ride to right from here .

You know, I think it really ties the room together. That, and it prevents anyone from sitting in the chairs, so, bonus!

When I first got into mountain biking, every damn ride was soooo wet. The first time I got a dry day, I rode until my legs we’re dead. I cherish those days now.

This year has just been WET. We had a crazy wet spring, and now that we’ve moved into summer proper, we get like 3 -5 nice days and then a total deluge of a storm, 1-2 inches maybe. The water table is just full and the places that are usually only wet in May are still wet. The trail I rode the other night was wetter than I’ve EVER seen it. Doesn’t help that we got 3.5" of rain overnight last Thursday. That was pretty epic.

At least we don’t have to worry about forest fires, lol

Yea I honestly don’t mind a real wet day every once and a while. You get to work on some technical skills and be way over dramatic about sliding around turns, haha . If I have to carry the bike through a bog at any point, that’s too wet.

Agreed. It’s funny, I don’t mind getting totally hosed with water and mud so long as I’m riding. I hate it when I don’t make it through a stream or mud pit and have to step down into it, even though the result is the same.

I’m a bit jealous. Took my bike out for some single track riding on monday night, I ended up breaking a pedal, wedging my chain, and bending a chain ring before soaking my self when my water bottle leaked.

Turns out, my 10 year old entry level Marin is starting to show it’s age and weaknesses.  Oh well, I’ll fix it up a few times before I try to convince the wife that I need something new.

I did, and I did find a Green/Brown one, but it was 750 miles away and it was a base model. That’s still a great looking color when it’s clean like that! The three that I looked at had all been on their respective lots for at least 5 months!

How does that DHR2 roll in the back?

I have DHFs front and back which have been fine, but I’ve been thinking about swapping to an aggressor in the rear for a little less rolling resistance.

The Tallboy I demoed had a Crossmark 2 in the rear which made me nervous but the grip was just fine which has made me question if I need such burly tires on my bike.

Ouch! That’s a rough night. We only had one mishap, but only blood, no bike damage that couldn’t be fixed on the spot.

It’s hard to say since I’ve only ridden it once, and it was not on a smooth trail. There’s one section of smooth, fast riding but it’s kinda brief. I really liked it in the wet muck and such, and I cranked right up a series of very steep/sharp  switchbacks with rocks, roots, and leaves all over. I’m not sure I’d trade the traction for better rolling, as hardly any trails around here are fast or smooth haha. A lot of people run this same tire setup around here, not surprisingly.

Perhaps the craziest thing about all the broken things on my bike? It wasn’t a crash, just normal riding . I was pedaling up hill, and crack, my pedal broke. Then I tried to downshift a ring, and the chain jumped and jammed between the rings and bent the middle one. I managed to go another mile or so on the large ring, but that made hills suck more than usual.

I need to find some riding buddies in town.

Interesting, sounds like y’all have some fun riding over there.

A lot of our trails are pretty smooth and fast , with some gnarly “root gardens” interspersed, brief steep climbs and drops, step ups step downs, but not too much elevation change overall.  Riding in the wet is a big no no around here too.

For that reason I want the volume of a burlier tire, but the weight and rolling resistance of an XC tire.

It’s fun for sure, but very challenging. It makes everything else feel easy, though. There’s a new place with a few miles of 90% machine-built smooth, flowy, amazing stuff - and they’re adding MILES of trail every year . Sounds more like what you’re used to, and it’s totally unlike anything else around, but SO much fun . The only issue is it’s about 30 minutes’ drive, whereas I can go right up a mountain from my house. I mean, I guess I’d rather have the really hard, technical stuff in my backyard so I’m not totally flummoxed when I meet the same conditions elsewhere. And it REALLY makes me appreciate smooth trails, or even just those where I can use gears other than the lowest one haha

Let me know when you rip out the NX and upgrade to at least GX, I would go with an XO shifter and derailleur . It will cost about $400 but it will shift so damn good.
